  13. Icon Archiver File Size Statistics:
  14.  
  15.   The numbers shown are based on two icon collections;
  16. the color collection contains 650 color icons extracted
  17. from various utility programs, the black & white one
  18. contains 3495 b&w icons extracted from the InfoMac V CD.
  19.  
  20. * Here's a quick review of the results:

  34. * Custom Icons Folder:

  36.   The icons are directly shown by the Finder,
  37.   but opening and scrolling the window is very slow.
  38.   Saving a large number of small files to disk makes the
  39.   disk catalog grow (slowing down disk recovery programs)
  40.   and wastes a lot of storage space on larger disks.
  41.   No more than a few hundred icons can be stored in one
  42.   folder, or the Finder stops working properly.

  60.   The icons must be decompressed before they are visible
  61.   (which can take a long while on slower machines),
  62.   and then they have the same problems described above.
  63.   Compressing a single folder containing too many icons gets
  64.   slower and slower (even on a Power Mac) as the number of
  65.   icons increases over a few hundred items.

  77.   The Archiver stores the icon data in a special compressed form
  78.   that allows it to decompress each icon's image on the fly when
  79.   needed; the archive opens very quickly even when it contains a
  80.   very large number of icons, and all icons are immediately visible.
  81.   Note that the compression method is more efficient than StuffIt on
  82.   black & white icons, and nearly as efficient on color ones as well.

  92. * Icon Archiver File, compressed with StuffIt:

  94.   The data format used by the Icon Archiver allows compression
  95.   programs to further compress the database very efficiently.
  96.   This is the best solution for long-term icon storage, although
  97.   a plain Icon Archiver file opens more quickly and doesn't
  98.   require any decompression (which makes it more suitable for
  99.   storage on CD-ROM devices).
